The two upper floors of a 1930s shophouse, turned into a family home around the old air well.

A reopened air well with plants, timber louvres and a bridge across the upper floor.

The brief

The shop below stays a hardware store. The family wanted to live above it without losing the light and air the building was designed around.

We cleared the air well of a 1980s roof, rebuilt it with a glass lid that opens, and bridged across it in steel and chengal.
